BUILT FOR HOW YOU USE YOUR YARD

Custom Paver Patio Installation
In Columbus, Ohio

For 20+ years, paver patio installation in Columbus has been at the core of what our team does. We design every patio in 3D and lead the same in-house crew from the first excavation to the final compacted joint.

HOW IT WORKS

Our Process for Paver Patio
Installation in Columbus, Ohio

Working with Capital City Patios doesn’t start with a contract. It starts with a conversation about what you actually want, and a design that lets you see it before anyone picks up a shovel.

Free Estimate and Site Visit

Chris comes out to your property, takes measurements, and gets a clear picture of the site conditions — grade, drainage, existing irrigation, anything that’s going to affect how the project is designed and built. Estimates are free.

3D Design

With Unilock’s Uvision software, Chris makes a 3D model of your project based on actual measurements of your home and yard. You can do a virtual walkthrough and see the patio from every angle before any work begins. That gives you a preview of the paver patterns and colors, how the steps integrate, and where the wall sits (if one is needed). Most customers come in with ideas but are looking for direction. The design is where that comes together. If you hire Capital City Patios, the design is included. If you decide not to move forward, you can purchase the design for your records.

Material Selection

Once the layout is settled, we walk you through your options. Most projects use Unilock — the industry’s top concrete paver brand — with everything from large-format contemporary styles to rustic, aged textures. Locally made Oberfields products can be a great option for budget-conscious projects without sacrificing quality. We also offer natural stone, bluestone, and GeoCeramica’s porcelain-on-concrete tile for winter durability. Bring your inspiration to the estimate, and our team will help shape it into a design that’s uniquely yours.

Installation

The installation begins with excavation and base preparation. The base is built to handle Ohio’s freeze-thaw cycles, helping reduce the movement that can cause concrete slabs to crack over time. Pavers are laid, leveled, and jointed, with cuts kept to a minimum where the pattern allows for it. We handle utility conflicts, downspout drains, and any drainage issues that come up during the dig. Chris runs a tight job site and tries to move things through quickly so you’re not living around a construction project longer than you need to be.

Finishing and Walkthrough

Once the surface is compacted and the joints are set, Chris walks the finished project with you to make sure everything matches the design and meets your expectations. Any questions about maintenance, sealing, or what to expect over the coming years get answered before we leave.

INVESTMENT

How Much Does
Paver Patio
Installation
Cost?

Pricing depends on a few variables, including the material (paver material alone can range from roughly $5 to $20 per square foot, depending on the product you choose), the design (straight lines with minimal cuts are faster and less expensive to install than curves, custom borders, and complex patterns), and site conditions (a flat, open yard with easy access is a different job than one that requires working around fencing, existing irrigation, or retaining walls).

WHAT WE DO BEST

Retaining wall installation

Retaining Walls

If your yard has any grade change behind the house, a retaining wall is often part of how the patio gets built in the first place, not an add-on. We build them properly with block systems designed for long-term performance.

Outdoor hardscape steps and stoop

Stoops & Steps

Your entry steps should be just as durable as your patio. We build stoops and steps using premium Unilock and Oberfields Versa-Lok products, with optional railings and integrated step lighting.

Outdoor patio and fencing installation

Fencing

Complete your outdoor project with fencing that adds privacy, security, and definition. We install a variety of fencing styles as part of the overall project for a seamless finished result.

Pergolas & Pavilions

Add shade and comfort to your outdoor living space with a custom pergola or pavilion. We incorporate these structures into the overall design so everything works together beautifully.

Patio Maintenance

Many older patios can be restored instead of replaced. Pressure washing, joint re-sanding, re-leveling settled areas, and sealing can extend the life of your existing hardscape and restore its appearance.

CASE STUDY

A Steep Problem,
A Stunning Solution

When the McConnells came to us, their backyard was virtually unusable. It had a steep hillside that dropped sharply from the house—beautiful in theory, miserable in practice. Mowing it, weed-whacking it, and maintaining it required a lot of work for a space the family couldn’t actually use or enjoy at the end of the day.

We built a retaining wall to meet the home’s elevation, then transformed that slope into 1,500 square feet of outdoor living: a patio, gas fire pit, sitting walls, decorative railing, composite stairs off the kitchen, and landscape lighting throughout. The family went from dreading their backyard to living in it.

Sheila McConnell summed it up perfectly: “It was like adding a new living space to our home. The finished patio was even better than expected — we couldn’t be happier.”

Frequently Asked Questions

With a proper base and reasonable maintenance, your new patio can last for decades. Qualifying Unilock materials carry a lifetime guarantee against manufacturer defects affecting their structural integrity. The installation itself is warranted by Capital City Patios for 3 years and covers any major settling that may result from the base work.

Concrete cracks. Once a crack runs across a concrete patio, there’s little you can do besides seal it and live with it. If a paver settles or shifts because of something underneath—such as soil movement, a rodent tunnel, or frost heave—the affected pavers can be lifted, the issue corrected, and the surface put back together. The base course under a paver installation is designed to accommodate movement through the freeze-thaw cycles that can cause concrete slabs to crack.

Not if it’s installed correctly. The patio is pitched away from the foundation to move rainwater away from the house, not toward it. A properly installed impermeable surface actually does a better job of directing water away from the foundation than turf does. If there’s a drainage concern specific to your yard, French drains or rerouted downspouts can be incorporated into the project. As an experienced backyard patio builder in Columbus, Capital City Patios will work with you to ensure all drainage is correctly handled.

It depends on the municipality and your HOA’s rules. For projects that require a permit, we handle the coordination with the city. If your HOA needs documentation or design details to approve the project, we provide whatever is needed. Some HOAs move quickly, while others may take longer to review and approve a project.

It varies by season. Summer is the busiest and driest time of year, which also makes it the best time to install. In peak season, the schedule can fill up months out. Some projects, particularly for new construction or commercial work, get booked a year or more in advance. The sooner you reach out, the more flexibility we have to work with your timeline.

If something comes up mid-project that you want to change, we’ll review the cost with you and document it in a change order if it affects the project scope or price. If it’s a minor adjustment that doesn’t affect our scope, we can often take care of it without a formal change order. The goal is for you to end up with what you actually wanted, not simply what was easiest for us to build.

Compared to a wood or composite deck, pavers require very little maintenance. Depending on tree coverage and how the patio is used, occasional cleaning may be all that is needed. Over time, the joints may need additional polymeric sand, and some homeowners choose to have the surface sealed to help protect against stains and enhance the color.

The main thing to ask any contractor is whether the crew doing the installation is actually their own crew, trained specifically for hardscape work. A lot of companies in Central Ohio will put a patio in your backyard. Some do it well, but a lot don’t. A significant portion of what Capital City Patios does is repairing other companies’ installations, including settled edges, water problems, and bases that weren’t built to hold what was put on top of them. Often, the issue comes down to improper base preparation or installation practices. Hardscaping is our specialty, not an add-on to a landscaping business.
